Western mathematicians fear AI makes them dumber while China builds an entire alliance for it

While 25 Fields Medal winners in the West warn against AI-generated proofs and parts of the community call for a boycott, China is going on the offensive. Fields Medal winner Shing-Tung Yau has launched an alliance of eight institutions and over 1,000 scientists to push AI into math research. Ask HN: What tools do you use to create 3D print models using AI

Hey HN! I have been dabbling into some hobby projects that require designing custom 3D printed models. I have been relying on AI models, mostly GPT Sol and Astra through Codex, and giving them certain tools such as Blender MCP and OpenSCAD CLI to design. My end goal is 3D printable designs ( .stl etc). The results have been good but not great. Iterating and improving them is such a pain in the ass. I want to know which specific tools or workflows you would recommend I should try. Thanks in advance! Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50072103 Points: 1 # Comments: 0

DLSS 5 gets toned down for its Hogwarts Legacy debut next month

When Nvidia originally showed off DLSS 5 earlier this year, the technology immediately got branded as gen AI for video games. To gamers, Nvidia had lost the plot. I personally couldn't get over how faces were transformed using DLSS 5. The 15-year-old student from Hogwarts Legacy suddenly looked much older, and Grace from Resident Evil […]

datasette-ports 0.4

Release: datasette-ports 0.4 My plugin for detecting and listing all Datasette instances on the current machine now works with the latest version, and displays the detected PID as well. Knowing the PID makes it easier to attach the new Python 3.15 profiler . Tags: datasette

web-edit 0.1a0

Release: web-edit 0.1a0 I was working on a project from my phone using Codex Remote when I found myself wanting to edit a credentials file without round-tripping those credentials through the LLM itself. So... I had Codex and GPT-6 Astra Extra High build this Python web app which provides a web UI for viewing and editing files in a folder. It's intended to be run over Tailscale, so I can have an agent start this running and then edit files via my Tailscale network directly from my phone. Here's the interface for browsing files in a folder: Screenshot of a web file manager interface. Header reads "WORKSPACE" above the title "Files", with buttons "Refresh", "Upload files" and "New file" (dark green). A breadcrumb shows "web-edit / web_edit / static". A table with columns "Name", "Size", "Modified" lists four files, each with "Download ↓" and "Delete" links: "app.css" 8.4 KB Oct 12, 2026; "app.js" 671.5 KB Oct 12, 2026; "index.html" 4.3 KB Oct 12, 2026 (underlined, as if hovered); "THIRD_PARTY_LICENSES.txt" 32.3 KB Oct 12, 2026. Below the table: "Images under 2 MB appear inline. Select a text file to edit it." A panel below is labelled "UPLOAD QUEUE" with heading "Add files" and a "Close" button. It has a "Destination folder" text field containing "web_edit", then a dashed drop zone reading "Choose files or drop them here" and "Set a path and filename for each file before uploading." with a "Choose Files" button and the text "no files selected". A greyed-out "Upload files" button sits at the bottom right. Editing uses CodeMirror 6 - I was going to use Monaco but that still doesn't have a great mobile experience yet. Quoting Geoffrey Huntley

If the agent isn't using my diagnostics library, I could introspect and update AGENTS.md, but there's still a delta, and it'll drift. Instead, I write a pre-commit hook that checks the git diff for direct calls to observability modules that bypass my diagnostics module. Boom: fail the commit, inject a prompt telling the agent to use the diagnostics library. All of a sudden it's ten out of ten. — Geoffrey Huntley , nobody should type code by hand anymore. here's what's left. Show HN: Mana – family organizer with an AI assistant

Hi HN, I built Mana, a family organizer: shared calendars, shopping lists, receipt scanners, meal planning, chores, and notes for the whole household, with a built-in AI assistant ("add milk and eggs," "plan dinners for the week") plus automations (e.g., milk goes back on the list before it runs out). Additionally, you can connect Mana MCP to your Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini etc. The goal is to eventually take the model calls and storage to local but that's work to be done. Appreciate if there's any feedback. Thank you! Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50071636 Points: 1 # Comments: 0

Building hanzkraftedIO in the age of AI-slop articles

So what was my purpose behind starting Hanzkrafted.IO? A short answer - an internet filled with AI articles everywhere. More specifically, technical articles. This is first, my own personal efforts to become a better engineer, and second, to provide other engineers with high quality technical articles curated meticulously by a another human engineer. https://hanzkrafted.io/ Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50071096 Points: 1 # Comments: 0

Show HN: I found a new planetary candidate in Kepler Data with AI

Hey HN! I was playing around with the Kepler and TESS data last weekend when I hacked around a way to pixel-peep planets and star dimming periodically to potentially find new exoplanets with Codex. I ended up running the engine to find an interesting signal in Kepler data with a dip repeating every 13.77 days around KIC 5689121, a red dwarf in Lyra about 970 light-years away. If it's a planet, it'd be roughly 2.5–3 times Earth's radius ! Funnily enough, this candidate is just 7.1 arcseconds from a much brighter neighbour (KIC 5689116) and is very hard to see because of how much brighter it is (probably why it went unnoticed for so long) Of course, there's work to do before calling it confirmed - my TRICERATOPS analysis is about 6.9% and we have to get IR/AO / Keck observations to prove it's out there ! (which I'm honestly intimidated by but cautiously optimistic about because I've never worked in non-CS adjacent research) but I found the activity of making cool tools to potentially discover things about our universe quite fun ! Would love feedback, especially from anyone who's worked with Kepler data or exoplanet validation :) https://x.com/kuberwastaken/status/2109240782368751834 Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50071497 Points: 1 # Comments: 0

Apple launches HomeView, its first smart display for the home

It's finally here: Apple's long-rumored smart display, the Apple HomeView, has arrived. I got a first look at the device in New York City this week, and it's gorgeous. The HomeView puts a small, vibrant screen atop a speaker base for taking video calls, beautifully displaying photos, and providing information at a glance with Apple's […]
